Learning about an Absent Cause: Discounting and Augmentation of Positively and Independently Related Causes

چکیده
Standard connectionist models of pattern completion like an auto-associator, typically fill in the activation of a missing feature with internal input from nodes that are connected to it. However, associative studies on competition between alternative causes, demonstrate that people do not always complete the activation of a missing feature, but rather actively encode it as missing whenever its presence was highly expected. Dickinson and Burke's revaluation hypothesis [4] predicts that there is always forward competition of a novel cause, but that backward competition of a known cause depends on a consistent (positive) relation with the alternative cause. This hypothesis was confirmed in several experiments. These effects cannot be explained by standard auto-associative networks, but can be accounted for by a modified auto-associative network that is able to recognize absent information as missing and provides it with negative, rather than positive activation from

Discounting and Conditionalization Dissociable Cognitive Processes in Human Causal Inference
When people are asked to judge the strengths of two potential causes of an effect, they often demonstrate discounting—devaluing the strength of a target cause when it is judged in the presence of a strong (relative to a weak) alternative cause. Devaluing the target cause sometimes results from conditionalization—holding alternative causes constant while evaluating the target cause. Yet discount...

Introduction: Cancellation of an elective operation is a very important problem, which is the cause for different types of stresses for patients and their families and results in loss of significant amount of time, money and hospital resources. Therefore, finding the main causes of operation postponement may help us to understand and reduce these problems. Material & Method: A special question...
متن کاملDiscounting and the role of the relation between causes
This research investigates how the relation between two causes (i.e. whether they co-occur or not) affects the likelihood to discount one of them. In two experiments, two causes were either systematically paired together (positive relation), were paired with many other causes (independent relation), or were never paired together (negative relation). The results indicate that discounting of one ...
متن کاملCausal discounting in the presence of a stronger cue is due to bias.
People use information about the covariation between a putative cause and an outcome to determine whether a causal relationship obtains. When there are two candidate causes and one is more strongly related to the effect than is the other, the influence of the second is underestimated. This phenomenon is called causal discounting. In two experiments, we adapted paradigms for studying causal lear...
متن کاملCalibration of Fair Social Discount Rate in Utilizing Iran Oil Resources: An Islamic View Point
There is a long tradition in economics about the question of whether intergenerational discounting is fair or not. Ramsey (1928) was the first economist that criticized the discounting and mentioned that the just rate of discounting is zero. In this paper it was tried to calculate the just rate of discounting for Iran with respect to Islamic thoughts. According to Islam, intergenerational just...
